PRESS RELEASE
From 3 to 4 June 2026, the 85th Session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) will be held in Dakar, Senegal, chaired by His Excellency Jean-Michel SAMA LUKONDE KYENGE, President of the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Union.
More than 150 delegates from the five sub-regions of the African continent are expected to attend this session of the APU Executive Committee.
Over the course of these two days of proceedings, the delegates will review, among other things, the activities carried out during the intersessional period, examine the Auditors’ report, and consider proposals for themes for the 48th Conference, notably for the Political, Economic and Sustainable Development Committees, and the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus. In addition, they will analyse the proposed amendments to the organisation’s Statutes as well as the applications for the post of Secretary-General.
The Executive Committee is the body responsible for guiding the Union’s activities and monitoring the implementation of the decisions, resolutions and recommendations of the Conference of Presidents.
The Conference of Presidents, for its part, is the Union’s supreme body, composed of the presidents of national parliamentary assemblies or their representatives.
The APU is a parliamentary organisation that aims to promote unity of action among the parliamentary institutions of African states; to establish itself as the forum for the national parliaments of the African continent and as an instrument of parliamentary dialogue and cooperation in the service of peace, democracy, good governance and sustainable development.
It also aims to work towards the gradual establishment of a genuine African legal community, based on the political, economic, social and cultural realities of the continent, as well as to promote contacts between African parliamentarians, on the one hand, and between African parliamentarians and those from the rest of the world, on the other.
The 84th Session of the Executive Committee was held on 18 and 19 November 2025 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in conjunction with the 47th Conference of the Union.
The APU, founded in 1976, has its headquarters in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and currently has 41 members.
