Peace and security are the prerequisites for economic and social development. This is why the African Parliamentary Union has always attached particular importance to these issues. African countries face major security challenges. Terrorism, organized crime, conflicts are all obstacles to overcome in order to work for development.

The APU participated in the UNOCT Global Parliamentary Conference on Countering Terrorism and Preventing Violent Extremism in Istanbul
On 7 and 8 October 2025, delegates from the African Parliamentary Union (APU) participated in the Global Parliamentary Conference on Countering Terrorism and Preventing Violent Extremism, organised by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) in Istanbul, Turkey.
The conference brought together several parliamentarians from national parliaments, international parliamentary organisations, representatives of UN agencies and civil society organisations.
The African Parliamentary Union delegation was composed of representatives from the parliaments of Benin, Mali, Nigeria, Chad, Senegal and the APU Secretariat.
Over two days, participants discussed the following topics:
- The absence of an internationally recognised definition of terrorism;
- The link between terrorism and organised crime;
- The response to terrorism in situations of armed conflict;
- Legislative and policy responses to technological abuses for terrorist purposes;
- Strengthening parliamentary oversight of counter-terrorism efforts;
- Future directions for legislation and oversight for parliamentary action.
